OUR HISTORY

HOW WE STARTED

Celebrating 36+ years

In 1987

A group of senior citizens who felt strongly about helping others preserve their independence while avoiding social isolation founded Serving Seniors Inc. in February 1987.

1989

"Discover Choices," a three-year health promotion initiative funded by Health and Welfare, was introduced to Landmark, Steinbach, and R.M. of Hanover. To teach elderly and caregivers about the program, two employees were hired.

1991

A steering committee was created to be responsible for researching the process of developing a senior centre after the board of Serving Seniors assessed the impact of the programs. The board of directors realized that this active living program needed to continue past 1992, and so a staff person was hired, a membership implemented and the search for a building was started.

1993

401 Main Street was leased.

1995

The Centre now known as “Steinbach 55 Plus” moved to 198 Chapel Drive. The board and membership were still on the hunt for a building they could call their own.

2000

The Centre moved again. For 4 years Steinbach 55 Plus operated from the lower level of 304 Second Street.

2002

Steinbach 55 Plus put an offer in to purchase a 15,000 sq. ft. building, plus a portable attachment. A few months later that offer was accepted.

2004

Steinbach 55 Plus moved to a facility at 10 Chrysler Gate. A place they could call their own. This facility provides space for a variety of different programs and rentals. Steinbach 55 Plus is finally settled and enthusiastic about calling this facility their home.

2013

Pat Porter was a name synonymous with Steinbach 55 Plus.  Her unfortunate passing in December of 2012 led to a committee being formed to designate what would be done with the funds that were donated in her memory.  As a legacy to all the work she had done with the Centre from 1989 -2012 our facility was renamed “Pat Porter Active Living Centre”.  A scholarship fund for a SRSS graduate entering nursing was also initiated.
